Shipping to Russia: How We Solve Border Problems

Russia is our main route. 60% of shipments go to Russia. I know all borders, all crossing points, all customs officers (in a good way).

But even with such experience, situations arise that require quick decisions.

How we choose a route to Russia

From Belarus to Russia, you can enter through several border crossings:

  • Krasnaya Gorka (Smolensk region) – moderate traffic, 2-4 hours
  • Burachki (Vitebsk region) – heavy traffic, 4-8 hours
  • Lobok (Pskov region) – low traffic, 1-2 hours
  • Sebezh (Pskov region) – low traffic, 1-2 hours

I choose the route based on congestion and urgency.

What documents are needed for Russia

The list is short:

  • CMR
  • Invoice
  • Packing list
  • Power of attorney for the driver

But there are nuances: if you're shipping food – you need a quality certificate; if machinery – a manufacturer's passport; if dangerous goods – ADR documents.

How we cross the border

1. 1 hour before the border, the driver calls me. I check the crossing point's congestion map.

2. At the border, the driver submits the documents. Check takes 5-10 minutes.

3. After the border, I inform the client.

Average crossing time: 1-3 hours.

Case study: shipping food to Moscow

A client from Brest was transporting 5 tonnes of sausages. At the border, they required a veterinary certificate that had an error in the product name. I contacted the veterinary service, they reissued the document in 2 hours. The cargo crossed the border with a 4-hour delay.

Now I check product names in documents before shipping. One letter can cost 4 hours of waiting.

Delivery times to Russia

  • Moscow: 12-24 hours
  • Saint Petersburg: 24-36 hours
  • Yekaterinburg: 3-4 days
  • Kazan: 2-3 days
  • Vladivostok: 7-10 days

What to do if cargo is held up

In Russia, delays are usually due to an incorrect HS code, missing documents, or cargo inspection. I help resolve all issues remotely.

Conclusion

Russia is the simplest and most straightforward route. If documents are in order, the cargo crosses the border in 1-3 hours. If there are issues – I'm always available.
