Over 13 years, I've moved more cargo across the borders with Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia than I can count. And every shipment is a small operation with dozens of nuances.

The main problem isn't the border queue – it's the documents

Clients think: 'The worst thing is the queue at the border.' No. The queue is manageable. The worst is when the documents are incorrect.

A client shipped machinery to Germany. The documents were in Belarusian. At the Polish border, customs required an English translation. We had to find a translator, redo the documents – the shipment sat for 2 days. The client paid €300 for downtime.

Now we check documents in two languages – Belarusian/Russian and English. And before dispatch, I call the customs broker to confirm everything is correct.

Which documents do you actually need for the EU

Many people list documents. I'll tell you what's truly important:

• CMR – critical. Without it, they won't let the cargo through.
• Invoice – critical. Shows the cargo value for customs.
• Packing list – critical. Describes what's inside and how many items.
• Certificate of origin – important for customs benefits.
• Quality certificate – needed for food and pharmaceuticals.
• Transit permit – sometimes required for goods from third countries.

**My advice:** Before shipping, send me all documents. I'll check and tell you if something's wrong. It's free and takes 15 minutes.

How we actually cross the border

1. 2 hours before the border, the driver calls me. I check the queue status via cameras and apps. If the queue is long – I reroute to a nearby crossing point.

2. At the border, the driver submits the documents. I'm on call if translation or clarification help is needed.

3. After the border, the driver reports that everything went through. I inform the client.

Crossing time: from 1 hour to 12 hours. Depends on cargo, documents, and queue.

What to do if your cargo is held at the border

1. Find out the reason (I contact customs).

2. If it's a document issue – I help resolve it remotely.

3. If it's a cargo issue – we find a compromise with customs.
